About mica
Key trends in mica consumption. Application areas

World mica demand dynamics is mainly defined by economic situation in electrical industry (electric insulating materials), motor car construction (general mechanical rubber goods, paint-and-lacquer materials) and building (finishing materials) - key industries - end users of the mineral. World consumption volume of sheet mica is equal to 6,000 per year, of shredded mica - 300,000 per year. Annual mica sales volume in the world is equal to $150,000,000.
Sheet mica is mainly used in electrical industry when producing electric insulating materials of high quality. This traditional application area reserves its import despite substitute products distribution. Sheet mica of quality has become quite a deficient product for the last years due to gradual depletion of the mineral deposit. Its world consumption reduced from 13,000 in the year of 1995 to 6,000 in 2000.
The key application areas of shredded mica - production of composite and paint-and-lacquer materials - refer to mature industries and are characterized by relative stability and low growth rate. According to the information kept by the magazine "Industrial Minerals" about 75% of shredded mica produced in the world using a dry method is used while producing gypsum board liners and paint-and-lacquer materials.
World consumption of mica-bearing pigments increased from 10,000 in the year of 1995 to 12,500 in 2000 and there is a trend in further expansion, this dealt with growing popularity of pearl-coloured cars (more than 80% of it is used while producing car enamel), especially in the USA. As the American company "Engelgard Corp." says, in 2000 some 50% of cars produced in the USA and 30% of those ones produced in Western Europe had a colouring with pearl hue, "metallic" and so on. The given application area of mica is considered to be perspective especially under the influence of fashion.
The most prestigious application area of finely shredded (produced by wet method) mica is cosmetic industry but its share in overall consumption of this mineral doesn't exceed 0,5% but as to tonnage - not more than 0,1%.
