About mica
Mica and ecology

Pennsylvania State University scientists assisted by National Science Foundation carried out researches relating to the problem of elimination of deleterious subjects from rivers and potable water. Scientists' team in charge of professor of clay mineralogy Ridkhar Comarneni proved that synthetic clay known as swelling clay could part radium ions from water. This discovery may be of great consequence for nuclear industry during the burial of radioactive factory waste and waste being deleterious to environment especially in regarding cleaning rejects left after uranium treatment. Cleaning rejects contain radium and heavy metals that can be leached in subterranean waters and contaminate potable water sources.
Natural mica is the mineral composed of aluminum, silicon, magnesium and potassium. Mica plates are closely adjacent to each other forming a solid, lamellar mass. Natural mica is of dense structure with filled space between layers where ion exchange means are badly expressed. Mica natrium-4 like natural mica contain aluminum, quartz and magnesium but every potassium atom is replaced by two natrium ions and fluorine. Two natrium ions take more space than potassium atom, and so the distance between mica layers Na-4 is expanding, creating space for water and radium trapping.
Mica Na-4 has a clearance between layers of approximately 2/6 angstroms. The clearance is small enough to catch hydrated ions of natrium, calcium, magnesium or potassium. However, radium is less hydrated and so it is easily held between mica layers. Mica being fully filled up with radium, layer shift takes place and radium atoms get caught by stratified structure as a result. If mica is only partially filled up with radium, mica heating higher than 212?F results in radium locking on site. Scientists used X-rays diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to estimate chemical properties of those new substances class. One of the problems posed in front of researches is availability of larger capacity for metal absorption inside new clay than inside substances being in use. A set of new experiments made, scientists came to the conclusion that when transformed into fine-dispersed powder mica natrium-4 gets more useful for practical application than big crystals.
